Marigny Green: ReCycle

The goal of FMIA’s Marigny Green/ReCycle is to encourage the city to restored citywide curbside recycling program that has not returned since Hurricane Katrina. A long term goal is to have 100% of Marigny residents recycling. Recycling is possible in New Orleans and Marigny Green ReCycle wants your recycling to be easier and more common. Below are some following options for recycling your household and business waste.

Phoenix Recycling (www.phoenixrecyclingnola.com)

Phoenix Recycling offers convenient biweekly curbside recycling services in New Orleans. Although Phoenix Recycling has to charge a small monthly fee to support its operating costs ($15/$14 for neighborhood association members), Phoenix offers one of the easiest ways to recycle in the city. Phoenix accepts common household plastics, cans, paper, and cardboard but unfortunately does not take glass. Pick-ups in the Marigny and Bywater are every other Friday.

Recycling Drop Off Events (www.cityofno.com/Portals/Sanitation/portal.aspx)

The City’s Department of Sanitation offers monthly recycling drop off events one Saturday per month from 9am to noon. The location closest to the Marigny is on North Claiborne and St. Peter. Check the website or call 658-2299 for more information and schedules. Bring your paper, metals, paper, and cardboard, but no glass or hazardous waste.

The Green Project (www.thegreenproject.org)

The Green Project is a nonprofit that promotes recycling, especially of building materials, in New Orleans. Located on 2831 Marais Street (and Press), the Green Project not only accepts cardboard, paper, and plastics, but also ­electronic waste (like computers, cell phones, printers) and building materials (like paint, hardware, and wood). Call 945-0240 for more information.

New Orleans Area Recycling Guide (www.thegreenproject.org/RecycleGuide.pdf)

This guide is the bible of how and where to recycle in New Orleans. The guide is particularly helpful in pointing out where to recycle less thought-of materials like batteries (Wal-Mart), light bulbs (Lamp Environmental Industries in Hammond), plastic shopping bags (Whole Foods), and Styrofoam packing peanuts (Royal Mail Services in the Quarter).

FMIA Meetings

Marigny Green ReCycle has initiated a recycling program for energy efficient bulbs (CFLs) and alkaline batteries for FMIA members. Marigny Green/ReCycle will accept alkaline batteries and compact fluorescent light-bulbs at every general meeting of the FMIA (third Monday of the month at 6:30 pm at the historic St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2624 Burgundy Street). Since there is no local recycling center in the city for alkaline batteries, Marigny Green and FMIA is committed to this initiative. Marigny Green/ReCycle has a contract with LEI for the recycling of alkaline batteries. Marigny Green ReCycle will accept donations for the alkaline batteries which is tax deductible. The ReUse District ( www.reusedistrict.org )

The ReUse District is a collaborative partnership between businesses and organizations that celebrate the importance of reused and reclaimed materials in the 7th Ward, Bywater, Marigny, St. Claude, and St. Roch neighborhoods of New Orleans.
